Bedrooms, The Art Of Placement

Feng Shui literally translates to wind and water. It's the art of placement of furniture and objects so as to have good flow of chi or energy, and nowhere is this idea more important than the bedroom. Even if you don't subscribe to the chi theory, Feng Shui is an excellent tool in interior design, especially modern interior design. Visit the link for the main points of Feng Shui and DIY a peaceful bedroom.

Salon Interior Design Project, Part One

I've been very busy working on an interior design job for a friend who is moving his salon to a new and much larger space. It's been a fun challenge. Salon design has evolved, especially with regard to modern interiors. There are a number of companies offering modern furnishings for this market, and I've looked at hundreds of stunning modern salon interiors. With that said, I've taken a more residential design approach to this project. I find that even these wonderful spaces and suppliers still have a "retail space" feel to them, and in an effort to create an individualistic space I wanted to add a more "modern home" feel.

Most of the high end suppliers of salon furnishings have all in one stations as their main option similar to these:

While they've are beautiful spaces and furnishings, there is still a trend in these designs. Here are some of the options I'm considering for the space.

I would like to use furniture such as console tables or dressers, table lamps, and framed mirrors along with styling chairs. I think it would make a big difference in the overall look and feel of the space. I will be posting on the design of the reception and waiting areas as well as other ideas for this project in future posts. I'd love your feedback!

The Great Ceiling Fan Debate

My husband and I have been discussing the issue of whether to install a hanging light or ceiling fan with a light in our master bedroom, which has extremely high ceilings. I was against a ceiling fan for purely aesthetic reasons. Granted, there are many sleek, modern fan designs on the market these days, but we have a mid-century modern interior design sensibility, and I was having trouble seeing the new, ultra modern fans in that type of interior. Well, I think we've solved the problem. These fans fit my criteria of working well in a mid-century modern interior while providing my husband with the utility of a ceiling fan. Now we just need to find a very tall ladder to install one of these.

Wall Of Water

A friend of mine is designing his new salon and I have offered my services with the interior. We were talking about having a wall of water and I thought of a restaurant I love called Soba in Pittsburgh. They have this wonderful wall of water on slate tiles. The water forms a continuous sheet down the slate that is hard to capture in photos but I find it so beautiful and tranquil in person.

Cube storage that provides privacy, under the stair bar, 360 degree rotating TV, shelve steps, insulating roof garden and a computer desk with a bed as the chair.

One Home, Warm Interior Design

One Home offers professional residential and commercial design services, from furniture selection to interior architectural design. Their aesthetic is primarily classic modern, however more of an eclectic look reflecting the clients' individual personalities and lifestyles is often created. I find it very appealing that they use so much wood and natural color. It creates warm spaces that don't have that overly designed look to them.

Fresh Look at a Stale Cottage

Living a modern lifestyle doesn't mean you have to buy a mid-century modern home or build a new one. This cottage redo goes to show that the bones of any home style can successfully have a modern injection. Bret Zamore and his fiancee Rene transformed this cottage style house in Houston into a cool combo of classic and modern. From Cottage Living.

Viewer's Interior Design

I want to give a big hand to Joel at Blue Ant Studio for sharing his home with us. The modern architecture of this house is filled with classic mid-century design and every attention to detail has been taken into consideration, from the cool light fixture on the stairs to the modern landscape design outside the home. The main dining area has a wonderful combination of red Eames plywood chairs and Bertoia wire chairs. In the living room small details like the white vases on the Noguchi coffee table are highlighted by the white of the orchids on the Saarinen side tables. The overall effect is fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing you fabulous design sensibility.
