Xoo Bookends

Vessel USA Inc. has recently introduced Malcolm Leland’s X00 (zoo) industrial design bookends. This new design was inspired by Los Angeles’ famous historical American Cement Building on Wilshire Blvd. In 1961 Malcolm was commissioned by the architect to produce a sculptural façade made of reinforced concrete which had never been done before at that time. The 10 foot Xs’ were then cast one at a time and place in position creating a sculptural structure for the upper 13 story lofts and the lower half which is the parking garage. His sculptural design has been a part Los Angeles’ skyline since 1964.

Eames House Bird

Charles and Ray Eames were master of the interior "collage" with numerous objects brought back from their extensive travels. The figure of a black wooden bird - evidently one of their most prized objects of American folk art - has stood in the center of their living room for over fifty years. It appeared in many Eames photos including the very famous one above. Based on the original artifact and in cooperation with the Eames family, Vitra is now producing the first series of this figure. The Eames house bird is made from solid Alder with a black lacquer finish and steel wire legs.

Small Spaces, Double Duty

I love interior elements and design that serve more than one purpose. I find this sort of problem solving to produce such clever designs. Here are some examples from Small Spaces. Cube storage that provides privacy, under the stair bar, 360 degree rotating TV, shelve steps, insulating roof garden and a computer desk with a bed as the chair.

MacBook Air, Thinnovation

It's not the latest breaking news but I'm just getting to the MacBook Air since I spent some quality time with it today. I'm a Mac lover so keep that in mind. I found the MacBook air to be fabulous. Thin, and yes, light. A true travelers laptop. It has a full size keyboard with all the keyboard features and an amazing mouse pad with multi-touch, allowing you to zoom, scroll, or rotate by the movement of two fingers on the pad. It also has a built in iSight camera. The small battery still gives you 5 hours of use and the 13.3" screen is more than ample. The only drawback, no disc drive included so you will have to use an external but I don't think it's a big deal. The pros far outweigh the cons. Find a Mac store near you and check it out.

Fireplace Tools

I'm always looking for the perfect fireplace accessories for my house. These pieces are designed by Peter Maly and offer a nice alternative to what most stores are offering in modern fireplace tools. I love the wicker wrap on the handles and the fact that he has designed andirons as well. Click on the link for more of his pieces.

Gotland Sheepskin

I grew up with a sheepskin on a leather slingback chair in front of our fireplace. It was a treasured place to sit as a small child, and I have two infront of my fireplace today. This is a stunning beauty of a sheepskin that would be a warm addition to my room and yours.

Brian Neidermayer

Brian Neidermayer is, without a doubt, one of my most admired metal smiths. His work is so unique in theme, combining natural elements with modern forms and elegant shapes. His use of gold accents and brushed silver finishes is a stunning combination. Having worn several of Brian's pieces, I love the weight of them. He does not skimp on his metal, giving his jewelry such a solid presence. With each link, bubble and spike hand formed with great care, I hope one day to achieve such mastery. His work is available through Four Winds Gallery.

I've never been a fan of cute little animal ring holders with their tails up in the air, but this jewelry holder designed by David Tisdale is quite another matter.
